When we think of perms, we think 80’s kinky curls, leg warmers, and mall bangs, am I right? The trends in late 2017 to the new year are leaning towards curly, voluminous hair rather than the stick strait flat ironed hair we had been seeing for ages. More people are embracing their natural state of hair these days, and letting it flow. Why fight it?
For those of us with strait hair, how can we achieve these loose barrel curls on a daily basis without hours in front of the mirror with a curling iron? Were not talking tight, poodle hair, but loose curls, wash and go, or to diffuse easily without frizz. Well, the great thing is, perms are more advanced these days, gentler on the hair, and when using a larger rod you get that loose wave that you most desire. Julienne Hough recently made fashion headlines for getting a perm with Olaplex, the results were fantastic. Julienne has highlighted hair, which makes certain strands more porous than the other, but her hair was strong enough to withstand the chemicals of a perm. First go for a consult with your stylist to see if your hair is in proper condition, and what to expect in your results. Make sure your stylist is seasoned and familiar with these type of perms. Ask to see the size rod they are going to use, and pictures of past clients with results similar to what you desire. Also, having a picture is always a plus!
Lesson here is, do your homework.
1. Find a stylist who is familiar and comfortable doing perms, and has recently achieved the look you are going for on past clients.
2. Make sure your hair is healthy, by doing regular conditioning treatments at home, and you're hair is not over processed by doing too much color or highlighting.
3. Be ready for a change. When doing any type of change to the hair, always make sure you are mentally prepared for it, and willing to take the time to learn to style your new do.
So in kicking off 2018, maybe that hype of the a fresh new year IS in fact, the perfect time for a change! Hey, maybe a modern perm is just what you're looking for.
